BACKGROUND
INFORMATIONS
The State Museum building is a historical artefact in itself. The building was originally the Ampang Tinggi Palace, built in the year 1861 by Yam Tuan Imam Sri Menanti at Ampang Tinggi, Kuala Pilah. This palace was built as a gift to Tunku Chindai, the daughter of the 5th Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Yam Tuan Ulin (who ruled from 1861-1869), when she married Tunku Muda Chik, the son of the 4th Yam Tuan, Yam Tuan Radin.

Built without the use of any nails, this timber palace contains an unusual number of finely carved panels and a pair of heavy sliding doors. Tunku Muda Chik added some more carved panels and he and his wife lived there. The palace was later given to their daughter Tunku Halijah, who became the second wife of Yam Tuan Muhammad, the seventh Yam Tuan. When she died in 1921, it was occupied from time to time by other members of the family.

In 1953, the eighth Yam Tuan, Tunku Abdul Rahman, gave permission for the nearly century-old building, which by then had gone to some disrepair, to be dismantled and transported to Seremban. Later in 1980, this beautiful building was moved to its present location at the Arts and Culture Complex. Among others, this museum houses collections of artefact from the Royal family such as artillery, copper and silver ware. The building overlooks a beautiful rectangular green lawn about 70 x 20m. Surrounding the State Museum, you will find British and Malay-made canon referred to as the 'ekor lotong' and 'lela'.
