BACKGROUND
INFORMATIONS

The authorities have dedicated a spot known as the Kuala Lumpur Deer Park to these gentle, intelligent creatures. A well-chosen peaceful area at the Lake Gardens that is more than 2ha in size has been turned into a suitable habitat for the deer.

Perhaps Malaysias most famous deer, the rainforest mousedeer or kancil, can be seen here. The kancil has a place in legends, folktales and history; one of these stories involves the founding of Malacca.

Circa AD1400, exiled prince Parameswara stopped to rest by a river when he saw a white mousedeer turn on his hunting dogs and frighten them away.

He chose this spot, where the weak could vanquish the strong, to establish a settlement; and named it after the malacca tree where he had stopped to rest.

The Deer Park is a beautiful spot where the landscaping has been well thought out and lush trees and shrubs planted to ensure that the habitat is cooling and peaceful. There are also ponds around the park
